1 - Doing Laundry

3 - Changing a Light bulb

Switch off the light that you'll be changing, and allow the existing bulb to cool before touching it. Twist the bulb anticlockwise until it is free - if it is a bayonet bulb it will only take one twist; a screw bulb will take slightly longer. Fetch your replacement bulb, making sure it's the same wattage as the original. Don't touch the new bulb with your bare hands, as you could damage the filament inside. 4 - Defrosting your freezer

Your first task should be emptying the freezer. Once your freezer is empty (remove the drawers/ice tray also), unplug and leave the door open, putting some old towels around the bottom to soak up the inevitable deluge of water. Boil the kettle and fill a bowl with the water. Place the bowl in the centre of the freezer and use a cloth to spread the warmth around. Remove any large chunks of ice by hand, and then refill the bowl with boiling water and let the steam go to work. Repeat until all the ice is gone, dry off with a towel and you're good to go.

5 - Dusting

Empty the room entirely. This requires moving furniture as well as smaller items in the room, and you may need a helping hand. Put on some good music or a movie to entertain yourself while dusting. Venus Figurines of the Paleolithic World

The famous Venus figurines are widely known in the Goddess and Archeological communities. The great debate over whether or not these figurines of women were looked at as a Mother Goddess, or something else, is still being discussed today. The evidence that these figurines were looked at as representations of a Mother Goddess, is in my opinion, overwhelming. Everything from the exaggerated breasts and belly's of the figures, down to the point that nearly no male figurines have been found. The female figurines outnumber the male by a long shot. Of course, while there were some male statuettes found, the over abundance of female representations simply can't be ignored.

There are many different female figurines that have been found all over the world. Some dating as far back as 35,000 years ago. I will cover two of those figurines with you here. These are the Venus of Laussel, and the Venus of Lespugue.

The Venus of Laussel was found in southwest France and dates back 25,000 years. It is actually a bas-relief carving made of limestone, that was found on a big stone block very near to the prehistoric caves of Lascaux. In the relief, a woman is standing nude with exaggerated breasts and stomach, and she is holding a bison horn with 13 notches in it. Many think this represents the menstrual or moon cycles throughout the year. She was lightly painted with red ochre, many of the Venus figurines have had traces of red ochre on them, which is seen as the life giving color of blood. She is pretty featureless besides her exaggerated areas, and she holds her hand over her belly. Some have suggested that this carving might have once stood at the entrance to sacred caves where rituals of fertility took place. Many prehistoric people held rituals in caves, evidence of this comes to us by cave art found deep within them.

The Venus of Lespugue was found in the stone age cave of Les Rideaux in the Haute Garonne region of France. She is carved from mammoth ivory and dates back about 25,000 years ago. This particular female figurine shows the most exaggerated features of any kind, especially her breasts. She is also shown wearing what seems to be a skirt, which is said to be the earliest representation of spun thread. This figurine was actually damaged during excavation and had to be restored.

What I find interesting, is that many of the female figurines, have been found in or near caves. In prehistoric times, tribes people would hold rituals in caves. Many archaeologists believe that these rituals pertained to hunting magic, fertility and initiation. It is said that sacred caves were seen as the womb of the mother. So it would make sense that many of these figurines were found in or around caves. Again relating it all to the Great Mother Goddess figure our prehistoric ancestors revered so much.

A chromosome is a single strand of DNA which has been condensed and super coiled inside a cell which carries genetic information. The genome of the women are exceptional in that they have two of the same chromosome. However, the two x are not coded or block at the same time to reduce the redundancy of expressed genes. Therefore, one of the x chromosomes is inhibited by a process called X-Inactivation. Packaging of the x chromosome inactivated in a highly condensed DNA called heterochromatin molecule inhibits the expression of several copies of the same gene at the same time. This process is to ensure that women have twice as many genes on chromosome of x being expressed in men. This can be very useful regulated in women. Scientists do not yet have all the answers on how these genes are settled between the two x researchers know that it has something to do with the MICRORNA that are essential in the control of the expression of the genes, but the triggers in the body resulting in the MICRORNA to bind and inhibit genes are unknown. Zeno's Paradox and the Infinity Proof: Why Infinity Doesn't Exist

Quite a few years ago I took a group of A level philosophy students to a small university in Wales which was keen to promote its philosophy department.

Presentations on a number of philosophical topics were given to A level students from various schools and sixth form colleges possibly interested in pursuing a degree in philosophy. Among these was an account of the philosophical problem of what is called Zeno's paradox, which 'proves' that movement is impossible. Since clearly movement is possible, the 'proof' is paradoxical.

You are probably well aware of the story, but I'll present it briefly in case it would be helpful. A tortoise and Achilles have a race. To make it more fair, the tortoise is given a head start. But, actually, the tortoise is not given much of a lead and, in practice, it will be easy for Achilles to catch up and overtake it. But he can't ever do this, according to the paradox. The problem is that, in order to overtake the tortoise, Achilles will first have to reach the point where the tortoise started. But when Achilles reaches this spot the tortoise will have gone further forward. Achilles then has to get to the tortoise's new position. But when he gets there the tortoise will again have moved forward. This continues indefinitely - or, rather, infinitely. Each time Achilles reaches where the tortoise had got to, the tortoise has moved on. Achilles can therefore - the argument goes - never catch up with the tortoise.

Another way of putting the problem is that, to reach the tortoise, Achilles has to get half-way to where the tortoise is at any given point. And once Achilles reaches the half-way point, he then has to reach half-way to where the tortoise now is. And when he reaches this point, he then has to... I think you get the point. This happens to infinity, so Achilles gets closer and closer to but never catches up with the tortoise.

In fact, according to this logic, no movement is possible at all because, in order to move to the tortoise's starting point, Achilles has to get half-way there. And in order to get half-way there, he has to get half-way to this point. But in order to get to this point he has to get half-way there too. And so on. In other words, Achilles has to travel through an infinity of points even to get started. Since he can't do this, he can't move at all - and nor can anybody or anything else.

I was placed among a group of students from various schools given the task of discussing this problem. It happened that the lecturer who presented Zeno's paradox was in my group. I suggested that, if infinity doesn't exist, the paradox doesn't exist and Zeno's problem vanishes as a mirage. My suggestion was swept aside with the words, 'You can't just dismiss infinity!'

Logically, with respect to the paradox there are three possibilities: (1) that movement is not possible; (2) that infinity does not exist; (3) that Zeno's paradox is faulty philosophy. The first possibility can confidently be rejected. The third can also provisionally be rejected, since many philosophers still regard Zeno's argument as pertinent. This leaves us with the second possibility: that infinity does not exist. This possibility has not to my knowledge been carefully considered.

In this article, I'd like to show that infinity doesn't exist. Without infinity, there is no paradox for Zeno: if there are not an infinite number of points to traverse, but just a specific distance, then there is no problem in making the first step, in getting half-way to anywhere, or in catching up with and overtaking a slower moving object (given sufficient time).

I have a number of arguments to prove that infinity doesn't exist - which are perhaps all the same argument posed in different ways.

1 Infinitely small

An infinitely small unit is an impossibility. For a unit to be infinitely small it would equate with zero. How big is an infinitely small space? It's no space at all, because if it took up any space whatsoever it would not be infinitely small. An infinitely small space therefore does not exist. Being able to talk about an infinitely small unit, as if it has existence, does not give it existence - any more than talking about Martians or superheroes, or parallel universes, make them a reality.

Here's another way of demonstrating the same point. You might suppose at first glance that 9.99 recurring is an infinitely small distance away from 10 and represents an infinitely small fraction, but 9.99 recurring is actually the same number as 10. This is easy to demonstrate. What is 10 divided by 3? The answer is 3.33 recurring. And what is 3.33 recurring multiplied by 3? It's 9.99 recurring - or 10. The two numbers are the same.

Since Zeno's paradox is dependent on the notion of infinitely small spaces, this argument should be enough to neutralize it. But I'd like to take the opportunity to show that infinity has no existence with respect to largeness as well as smallness.

2 Infinitely large

There is no such thing as an infinitely small unit. But could an infinitely large space exist? Yes, if the universe is infinite, it might be argued. If it's not, an infinitely large space does not and cannot exist. So could the universe be infinite? I shall argue that it can't be.

For the universe to be infinitely large there would have to be two points, let's call them star A and star B, that are an infinite distance apart. You can't have an infinite universe unless there are points that are infinitely far apart, because if the furthest two points are only a finite distance apart then the universe is not infinite.

But as soon as two points are situated in space they have a spatial relationship with each other, and the space between them cannot be infinite.

Two points situated in space must have a point which is approximately half-way between them, which we'll call star C. If that place is measurable as half-way between them, however enormous the measurement, the distance is finite.

You might want to argue that there is an infinite distance between star A and this half-way point, star C. Then find the point, star D, half-way between A and C. Is this also an infinite distance from star A? Then do the same again. And again. Keep going an infinite number of times (supposing such a thing exists). Are the two points still an infinite distance away? They must still and always be an infinite distance away. This means of course that there cannot be a half-way point between stars A and B in an infinite universe.

From the location of star A, in which direction is star B? Star B is in no direction in relation to star A if it is an infinite distance away. If you could edge any closer to it at all, you wouldn't be an infinite distance away. To be an infinite distance apart the two points can have no spatial relationship with each other. Remember, it's not that any direction will be in the direction of star B (which could be true if space were finite and curved in four dimensions as the earth is in three dimensions), but that no direction leads in the direction of star B. If they have no relationship with each other - if in relation to star A star B is neither up, down, left, right, forward or backward (or any other conceivable direction), it has no existence relative to star A.

Travelling in all directions from star A, you'll never reach anywhere that has a spatial relationship with (i.e. is theoretically measurable in relation to) star B. Similarly, travelling in all directions from star B, you'll never reach anywhere that has a spatial relationship with star A. Imagine light travelling in all directions from stars A and B. However far the light travels, it can never reach infinity. A finite distance can never become an infinite distance (see argument # 3 below). The idea of an infinite universe erroneously assumes that finity can become infinity since stars (or points in space) are deemed to exist which are in the 'same' universe an infinite distance away.

Star A * [finite distance]... [becomes infinite]... [finite distance] Star B *

There is no reason to suppose (in this imaginary infinite universe) that there are only two 'areas' (star A and star B and all points stretching indefinitely from both in all directions) which are an infinite distance apart. How could the number of such 'areas' in an infinite universe be limited to any finite number? There must be an infinite number of locations an infinite distance apart, all being like a separate universe in themselves, having no spatial connection with the other infinity of 'universes' which are an infinite distance away.

Star A * [finite distance]... [becomes infinite]

Star B * [finite distance]... [becomes infinite]

But where are the boundaries of these apparently separate (because spatially unconnected) universes? There are no boundaries, since they go on forever. If they go on forever and have no boundaries they must be infinite. This means that there must be points an infinite distance away. But we've been through all this before...

Star A * [finite distance]... [becomes infinite]... Star AZ * [an infinite distance from star A]

Star B * [finite distance]... [becomes infinite]... Star BZ * [an infinite distance from star B]

As soon as infinity is postulated, infinity proliferates into an infinity of infinities.

But none of this is possible. A finite distance can never become an infinite distance. Travel from one point as far as you like, you never get an infinite distance away. There cannot therefore be two points an infinite distance from each other.

Two points plotted in space may be a very long distance apart, but they can't be an infinite distance. As soon as points are plotted in space, i.e. given a location, the distance between them is theoretically measurable. There is no such thing as an infinitely large space since finity can never become infinity. Space cannot be infinite. Infinitely large is as impossible as infinitely small.

If infinitely small units are deemed to exist, there is no possibility of movement. If infinitely large units are deemed to exist, locations in space must exist (in infinite number) that have no relationship with other objects separated infinitely from them.

3 Going on forever

But, you might object, we can keep halving - or doubling - a number forever. There is no limit to how small or big we can go. This is true, and it gives the illusion that infinity is possible. But although you can keep halving or doubling forever, forever never arrives: you never get to infinity. You never reach a number that is an infinite distance from the number you started with. However big the number is, it is still a number and has a relationship with the numbers that come before and after it.

This is just like the finite universe argument. However far away the points are, they never reach infinite. Keep counting and never stop; count in huge leaps; quadruple the number a trillion times with every count; count until the numbers are as long as a galaxy, as long as space itself - you'll never get to infinity. Finity never becomes infinity. Very, very big numbers are possible, as are very, very small fractions - but not infinitely big numbers nor infinitely small fractions.

Infinity is a concept. We have no trouble knowing what it means (even though we often use it loosely in an erroneous way, saying for example that something is 'almost infinite'). Potentials can be infinite: possibilities are infinite; but a possibility is not an actuality. Infinity has no actual existence. Nothing in the universe can be infinite. No infinity, no Zeno's paradox. Sorry, Zeno, and philosophy lecturer in Wales.

A paradox remains however, regarding not space but time. Time, from the present, can go on forever and infinity can never be reached - an infinite time will never have passed. That is true of the future. But what of the past? If time had no beginning but always existed, this would mean an infinity has already passed - a notion that is untenable with regard to space. But if time does not go backwards for ever, it must have started at some point. If the universe started at some point it would mean that something was created out of nothing: that there was no space, time, or matter, and suddenly these things came into being. Either time goes back for ever, or started at a certain point. Either is equally impossible.

Even if an infinite God exists (not bound by time and space, which are finite) who, at a certain moment, created space, time and matter from nothing, what was God doing before this? God, being infinite, must have been around long before the creation of the universe, in the gardens of infinity - just hanging around.

Zeno's paradox is traditionally thought to postulate the impossible: that, given the existence of infinity, movement is impossible. But the real importance of the paradox is the infinity proof; or, if you prefer, the finity proof: for any movement in space to be possible, for any activity at all to be possible (since all activity involves movement), and for all objects to exist in relationship with each other - infinity can have no existence.

A Warning From History

I just watched one of the BBC History Cold Case programs and it got me thinking about the situation in the world at the moment. A common saying is "History repeats itself" and this time I hope history doesn't repeat itself. I love this program mainly because after Western civilization collapses we could very well go back and live the way our ancestors lived. And the way we live now is a lot better, I mean a hell of a lot better. After the Roman Empire collapsed it took mankind over a thousand years to pass the technology of the Romans. So when our civilization comes unglued we will go backwards and now civilization could come unglued at any time.

The program I was watching was called "The Bodies in the Well" and here the team analyzed a bunch of 17 skeletons that had been buried in a well. Men, women and 11 children and a few cats had been thrown in the well. They searched historical records as well as doing a detailed analysis on some of the skeletons. And the results were not good and anyone working in finance should take note.

In the 12th and 13th Century, when these skeletons were carbon dated too, the Jews who had been brought to England by the King in the 11th century were being prosecuted and expelled. The Jews were the money-lenders because the religion at the time forbid the lending of money with interest. But the religion of the Jews allowed it that is why they were in England at that time.

But as they say all good things come to an end. There was a lot of discontent among the populous because the Jews were doing very little and making lots of money so the masses rebelled and killed the Jews. This happened across Europe as well as in England where the skeletons were. Even though the Jews were protected by the crown, when they needed the protection it was not there.

It is believed the Jews died by suicide as there were no visible signs of trauma on the skeletons. And they were dropped down the well just to get rid of them. They never explained why there were a couple of cat skeletons in the well also. Maybe the discontented masses through the Jews cats down the well after the bodies were thrown in.

Now can you see the correlation between then and now? The same situation is arising where the bankers are making tons of money doing very little. And the masses are getting foreclosed out of their homes.

Is history going to repeat itself again in the near future.

'Ben-Hur' Got It Wrong

The Roman emperor Augustus formed the first professional, full-time Roman Navy, as an auxiliary branch of the Roman army around the year 30BCE. At first, it was made up of ships captured from Anthony and Cleopatra at the battle of Actium and based at a place called Forum Iulii (modern Frejus, near Marseille, France).

Very quickly, the fledgling navy was split and based on either Italian coast, the main fleet on the Bay of Naples, at Misenum, the other, slightly smaller fleet at Ravenna, on the Adriatic. Other fleets soon followed. Egypt, Germany, Britain, Syria, Pontus (the Black Sea) and the two (Upper and Lower) Danube fleets.

The British, German and Danube Fleets existed to guard the Roman frontier, whilst the other fleets looked after sea travel in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. It is probably not by chance that instances of piracy dropped considerably during the height of the Roman Empire.

But, who were the men who worked aboard these fleets? We don't know much about them, because what few books were written by the Romans about maritime matters haven't survived, but there are two good sources of information, although they are both somewhat limited. The first is the military honourable discharge Diploma, made out of bronze and given to all auxiliary Roman soldiers (up until about the year 250CE), who completed their enlistment period. The other source of data are the small stone burial memorials put up by the families/friends/slaves of the auxiliaries themselves.

All together, there are no more than 1,000 records still extant, but one or two are still being discovered every year and sometimes they tell us the auxiliary's name, what fleet he belonged to, where he came from, what job he held aboard ship and what rank he held. Most records won't hold all of this information, because many were broken in antiquity.

What makes me say that Ben-Hur was wrong, though? Surely it doesn't say on somebody's gravestone that he wasn't a slave? In fact, this information came from two surviving Roman documents. The first were a collection of letters by the Roman writer, Pliny the Younger. During his career, he held the post of Governor of Bithynia and, whilst he was there, one of his assistants came to him with a problem. It seemed that amongst the Army recruits that year, there were two slaves. Pliny wrote to the emperor Trajan and asked him what to do. Trajan replied that if the slaves had joined up knowing they weren't supposed to do so, they were to be executed immediately!

The second document is far longer and was compiled by the Byzantine emperor Justinian to form the basis of his law code. In it, fossilised, as it were, are laws which dated right back to Imperial Roman times, one of which said, 'Slaves are prohibited from joining the military. If they do so, it is a capital crime'. Another entry in the Law Code, says explicitly, that 'Sailors and rowers of the fleets are also soldiers... '.

Couldn't be clearer, no galley slaves in the Roman navy, instead freeborn men from the Roman provinces were recruited to sail the ship and join the Marines.

These men came from all parts of the Roman empire, many from Thrace (in what is now Bulgaria), from Turkey and from Egypt (and native Egyptians were forbidden to join any military unit except for the Misenum fleet). So far, there is only one record which names a man from Britannia and he came from Isca Dumnorium, a city that is now called Exeter. He joined the German fleet and was buried near Cologne, which was the HQ, German Fleet.

Something which seems very odd about the auxiliaries' gravestones is that there are plenty to ship commanders and senior officers (centurions) but only one or two to rowers, or sail handlers. It could be that the men who actually worked the ships came from families which were illiterate, and so, didn't bother with gravestones, but it seems odd that a Roman warship, with maybe 120 rowers, only shows gravestones for one or two officers and no rowers. Maybe only officers' families could afford a gravestone?

And, what about the ships themselves? It seems that the workhorse of the two Italian fleets was the Trireme (otherwise known as a 'Three'). This ship was long, thin and fast, a definite warship. It carried 3 banks or rowers and probably had about 120 oars all together.

The provincial fleets were smaller and their ships were almost certainly a class called 'liburnians'. These ships were biremes, that is, they had 2 banks of oars and were slightly shorter than a Trireme. However, there were still long and fast and pictures on Trajan's column in Rome, show them with rams fixed to their bows, so that they, too, were fighting ships. The Danube and Rhine fleets also had fleets of smaller ships which acted as river patrol boats and guarded the far-flung frontiers. Some of these smaller ships (De Meern type) have actually been preserved in the mud of the river Rhine in Holland and were excavated a couple of years ago

As well as these ships, there were also a few far bigger vessels, the 'Fours' and 'Fives', whilst the Misenum Fleet had one big 'Six', named after the goddess 'Ops'.

Why would a provincial decide to sign up to join one of the fleets? Somebody who had been messing about in boats since they were a boy probably wouldn't have been very interested in joining the infantry and the Roman Army offered reasonable pay, a roof over your head, meals, and a qualified doctor around if you got sick. In all, the Roman army was probably a better service than most armies were, right up until WW1!

Auxiliary service also offered a major incentive to join up. Roman citizenship was jealously guarded. Until 212CE, when it was extended throughout the empire, most provincials wouldn't have had a hope of becoming citizens. However, if you joined the Auxiliaries and managed to survive to get your Honourable Discharge (25 years for infantrymen, 26 years for fleet personnel), then you automatically got not only Roman citizenship for yourself, but it was guaranteed for any children you had later on. (At some points, it was even given to sons auxiliaries had whilst still serving, which theoretically, was illegal, since soldiers weren't allowed to marry). Better still, the senior officers were given a discharge bonus which would have allowed them to buy into the equestrian order (minor aristocracy) and which opened the possibility of further plum jobs.

Would they have survived to get their Honourable Discharges, though? Seafaring is not the safest career, but it actually seems as if fleet auxiliaries beat the statistical odds for survival, slightly. The age at which Romans died is very skewed because so many died aged or under. If you could survive till you were 10, you had a good chance of making it to age 30, but many of the auxiliaries who had their ages on their gravestones seem to have lived on into their late 40s and early 50s. One grizzled old veteran actually made it to 90!

I have been researching the Roman navy for several years and I often catch mistakes like the 'Ben-Hur' story in historical novels, usually because so little has been written about the fleets.
I'm retired now, but I originally trained as an archaeologist, although a combination of bad health and bad luck forced me to give up my career before it had really gotten started.

Puzzles - An Age Old Learning and Development Tool for Children

For centuries puzzles have been at the centre of learning and child development. The challenging nature of these resources, as well as the fact they offer a fun experience makes them popular with children, teachers and parents alike.

Puzzles enhance a number of skills and sharpen up areas in childhood development otherwise hard to build up.

Cognitive Skills

Problem-solving and reasoning skills are essential in development and of course in the adult world. Developing spatial awareness and also an understanding of whole part relationships is of real importance to children. Fine Motor Skills

Puzzles are created in such a way to develop these fine motor skills. Children's fine motor skills begin with the pincer grip and move to more refined areas such as holding a pencil, or crayon. For example, puzzles with pegs aid such abilities and teach children to pick up, pinch and grasp pieces, which aid the pinch skill and overall fine motor skills.

Hand-eye coordination

Children who have to place pieces of puzzles into designated shapes need to learn to manipulate them to fit. Judging which shapes, whether in simple shape puzzles, or more complex jigsaws, is all part of the development of hand-eye coordination. This process of understanding what fits and does not fit aids the child's hand-eye coordination.

Social Abilities

Puzzles can be completed cooperatively and so are great for enhancing social skills. Children have to share pieces, ask for items and discuss the puzzle, consequently sharing, learning and communicating. Children also learn how to handle the irritation of a puzzle not fitting together and so develop this area of emotional understanding.

Choosing the appropriate puzzle for your child depends on a number of factors.

Age

Age appropriate puzzles are a requisite for this sort of learning. Children need to be challenged, though need to find the balance between doable and frustration. Toddlers may prefer chunky puzzles, or ones with knobs, whereas older children may like a 100 piece jigsaw.

Choosing Materials

Sensory perception is also important and so choosing wood, cardboard, foam, etc. is important for developing this skill.
